“If abuses are destroyed, man must destroy them. If slaves are freed, man must free them. If new truths are discovered, man must discover them. If the naked are clothed; if the hungry are fed; if justice is done; if labor is rewarded; if superstition is driven from the mind; if the defenseless are protected and if the right finally triumphs, all must be the work of man. The grand victories of the future must be won by man, and by man alone.” — Robert G. Ingersoll #philosophy #religion #quotes

Christmas Myth #9: The three kings were actually kings. According to the bible, they were not called kings. In Matthew they are referred to as “wise men from the East” or magi, depending on which translation / interpretation you are reading. The Magi were priests in Zoroastrianism and earlier Iranian religions. No names were included for the magi, but various later traditions have them named: In the West: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthaza. Syrians: Larvandad, Gushnasaph, and Hormisdas. Ethiopians: Hor, Karsudan, and Basanater. Armenians: Kagpha, Badadakharida, and Badalilma. #christmasmyths #christmasmythsbeardedboredguy

Christmas Myth #8: The 12 days of Christmas (also known as Twelvetide or Christmastide) are the 12 days leading up to Christmas. According to the story the 12 days of Christmas are actually the days between the birth of Jesus and the coming of the Magi (the epiphany). This “official” season was proclaimed at the Council of Tours in 567 and marks a period of feasting and celebration which ends on the twelfth night (January 6th). #christmasmyths #christmasmythsbeardedboredguy

Was walking on the trail and noticed a gnome in the trunk of a tree just off the trail a bit. Take a little time to look up from your phone from time to time. #gnome #hiddentreasures #art #whimsy

Christmas Myth #7: Mary rode into Bethlehem on a donkey. Nowhere in the bible does it say that Mary rode into Bethlehem on a donkey. She might have, but it isn’t “biblical”. The earliest record of this idea comes from the Protoevangelium of James (an apocryphal gospel). The day of the Lord shall itself bring it to pass as the Lord will. And he saddled the ass, and set her upon it; and his son led it, and Joseph followed. -17. #christmasmyths #christmasmythsbeardedboredguy

“Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming “Wow! What a Ride!” – Hunter S. Thompson
